Ol Doinyo Lengai

Rising dramatically from the Great Rift Valley, Ol Doinyo Lengai is one of the most fascinating natural wonders in Northern Tanzania. Located near the shimmering shores of Lake Natron—a vital nesting site for hundreds of thousands of pink flamingos—this striking volcano holds both geological and cultural significance.

Known to the local Maasai as the “Mountain of God,” Ol Doinyo Lengai is the only active volcano in the world that produces natrocarbonatite lava, often referred to as “cold lava.” Unlike typical lava, this rare form has a dark brown or black color and flows with the consistency of water. Although cooler than traditional lava, its temperature still reaches an impressive 510–600°C (950–1,100°F).

Over the past century, Ol Doinyo Lengai has erupted around 15 times, with the most recent eruption occurring in 2013. Fortunately, its relatively modest size and remote location—far from nearby Maasai villages—mean that its eruptions have not resulted in casualties.

A visit to Ol Doinyo Lengai is not only a journey into the heart of a rare volcanic phenomenon but also a chance to witness the stark beauty of the surrounding landscape—where flamingos, ancient lava flows, and Maasai culture intertwine in a truly unforgettable setting.

Ol Doinyo Lengai Climbing Tourr

Day 1: ARUSHA – LAKE NATRON

Your adventure begins in the morning as our driver picks you up from your hotel for the journey to Lake Natron. Though the drive is long, the scenery is stunning—expect glimpses of Maasai villages, vast open landscapes, and even some African wildlife along the way.

Upon arrival at Lake Natron Camp (shortly after lunch), you’ll check in and then head out with a guide on a scenic walking tour to the Ngare Sero Waterfall. This beautiful trail winds through a rocky gorge, often requiring you to cross the stream, so we recommend wearing sandals or water-friendly footwear.

Later in the day, you’ll take a short drive to the lake’s edge to photograph its surreal beauty—reflections of the sky, flamingos, and the hauntingly quiet landscape make for unforgettable images. Return to the camp for a hearty dinner and rest in preparation for your early-morning climb.

Day 2: TREKKING TO OL DOINYO LENGAI VOLCANO – RETURN TO ARUSHA

Your trek to the summit of Ol Doinyo Lengai, the sacred “Mountain of God,” begins at 1:00 AM. A nighttime start allows you to hike in cooler temperatures and reach the summit in time for sunrise. The path is steep and challenging, with loose volcanic gravel, so follow your guide closely and take short, regular breaks to acclimatize.

We recommend stopping for a light breakfast during the ascent to restore energy. At the summit (2,960 meters), you’ll be rewarded with a surreal view into the crater—you may even hear the molten natrocarbonatite lava bubbling beneath the surface.

The descent, though faster, requires just as much care. Most injuries happen on the way down, so take your time and use proper footing. As the sun rises, be sure to swap your warm gear for a sun hat to avoid overheating.

At the base, your driver will greet you with cold drinks, and you’ll head back to camp for a refreshing shower and lunch. Afterward, you’ll return to Arusha, tired but filled with unforgettable memories of your volcano trek.
