Lake Natron National Park

Hundreds of thousands of flamingos paint the horizon pink over Lake Natron—an unforgettable sight rivaled only by the breathtaking sunrises mirrored in the lake’s shallow, alkaline waters.

For those seeking a more off-the-grid adventure, Lake Natron is an ideal destination. Remote and rugged, it invites travelers to step beyond the safari vehicle and truly immerse themselves in the wild. Whether it’s getting splashed on a hike to a hidden waterfall or trekking up the slopes of an active volcano, this area offers a raw, hands-on experience with nature.

Things to do there

Lake Natron hosts vast colonies of pink flamingos, which build their nests in the muddy shallows along the shoreline. From afar, the sheer number of these birds—sometimes in the hundreds of thousands—gives the impression that the lake itself is glowing pink.

The surrounding region is also home to a large Maasai population. This indigenous Tanzanian community has preserved its traditional way of life, continuing to herd livestock and live in harmony with the land. Visitors often encounter Maasai men, women, and children adorned in bright, colorful attire, handmade jewelry, and performing their iconic high-jumping dance.

Lake Natron is truly one of Tanzania’s most unique destinations. Whether you’re drawn by the elemental force of Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano, eager to immerse yourself in Maasai culture, or hoping to photograph flocks of flamingos in flight, this remarkable place offers something unforgettable for every kind of traveler.

Little-Known Facts About Lake Natron

When searching for photos of Lake Natron, you’ll often come across striking images of mummified birds that appear to have turned to stone in the harsh natural environment. These haunting photographs were taken by Nick Brandt, a photographer known for his work capturing the wildlife of East Africa. It’s important to note, however, that these scenes were staged — the birds were carefully positioned on branches to create dramatic compositions. Such sights won’t actually greet you at Lake Natron. The same goes for aerial shots showing the lake as completely red — these views are only visible from above and don’t reflect what visitors typically see on the ground.
