Lake Manyara

Lake Manyara National Park lies at the base of the Great Rift Valley in Tanzania, nestled within a lush rainforest. The park is not only a haven for predators but has also become a sanctuary for large colonies of pink flamingos, whose impressive numbers leave even seasoned travelers in awe. The vibrant pink hue along the shore, reflected in the water, magnifies their already large population.

The park is home to over 400 species of birds, some of which are found only in this region of Tanzania. Among them are pelicans, storks, ibises, cranes, cormorants, and marabou storks. Manyara is also known for its ancient bird species, including various types of hornbills. In addition to the birdlife, the park is teeming with iconic African wildlife such as zebras, buffaloes, elephants, giraffes, lions, and numerous other species, making it a remarkable destination for nature enthusiasts.

Fascinating Details About Lake Manyara

Pink flamingo colonies migrate between different lakes throughout the year, arriving at Lake Manyara National Park from June to September. They settle in the mud flats, where their primary food, crustaceans, thrive. Without this diet, their feathers remain grey-white. Flamingo chicks are born grey, but as they mature, they turn pink within a year, due to the carotene found in the crustaceans they consume.
