Private and Group Climbs with Velam. What are the differences?

Watch the short video below to learn more about the differences between our open group climbs and private expeditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are Kilimanjaro group climbs different from private climbs?

Unlike a private expedition, a group climb is open to all, offering the chance to hike alongside an international mix of adventurers who share the same goal—reaching the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. This collective journey includes everything from the physical challenge of the trek to socializing over meals in the dining tent at camp. On the other hand, private climbs are reserved solely for you and your selected travel companions, whether that’s family, friends, or both—delivering a more tailored and intimate experience on the Roof of Africa.

Another major distinction is the scheduling. Group climbs follow fixed departure dates and set durations. For instance, if a 7-day Lemosho route is scheduled to begin on January 1st, it will stick to that timeframe. Private expeditions, however, allow full flexibility—you choose the start date that works best for you.

When it comes to extra services, group climbs have more limited customization compared to private tours. For example, in a group climb, upgrading to premium walk-in tents isn’t available. But rest assured, you’ll stay in our top-rated standard North Face tents—praised by over 95% of Velam Tours trekkers. Likewise, extended gourmet meal plans aren’t offered on group treks.

Still, many elements of both group and private Kilimanjaro expeditions are identical. Both are led by the same expert mountain teams, follow strict safety protocols and evacuation procedures, and use the same style of dining tents. The key differences lie in the fixed scheduling and the shared group dynamic of the open climbs.

How frequently do Velam join departures start?

As the leading operator of Mount Kilimanjaro treks, Velam Tours offers group departures every few days. This frequent scheduling is designed to suit the diverse travel plans of climbers visiting from all corners of the world. During peak seasons—like August, September, January, and February—we increase the number of available climbs to give travelers even more flexibility.

We also understand that every trekker has unique preferences, which is why we rotate between different climbing routes. This approach ensures that guests can find an expedition that not only fits their schedule but also matches their desired level of challenge and scenic variety.

We Can Create a New Group Climb for Your Dates

If none of our currently scheduled Kilimanjaro group climbs align with your travel dates, don’t hesitate to reach out to our team. We’re always open to the possibility of organizing a new group departure that matches your itinerary. Alternatively, we can assist you in selecting a suitable private Kilimanjaro trek, ensuring the experience is tailored to your needs and fits perfectly into your travel plans.

Why Are Group Kilimanjaro Climbs Priced Differently from Private Climbs?

Group hikes tend to be more cost-effective than private climbs. That’s because the overall expenses for a Kilimanjaro expedition—such as staff wages and logistics—are shared among all participants in the group. As a result, joining a group trek offers a more budget-friendly way to experience this iconic adventure.

On the other hand, the cost per person for private climbs decreases as the group size increases. For example, private trips with more than three participants can often approach the per-person cost of a group climb.

This pricing model makes private climbs quite economical for larger groups, giving more people the chance to explore Kilimanjaro affordably.

Can a Group of Friends or a Family Join a Group Climb?

Absolutely! Small groups of friends or family members often choose to join a scheduled group trek. While they have the option to book a private trip, many are drawn to the social element of a group climb. These journeys bring together easygoing, adventure-minded people from all over the world—making it a great opportunity to connect with others.

At Velam Tours, we often witness strangers becoming a tight-knit team after experiencing the challenge and triumph of reaching the summit together. Group climbs frequently foster deep connections and lasting friendships, adding an unforgettable social aspect to the climb.

How Many People Are in a Group Climb?

Our group treks typically consist of 10–15 hikers, which we’ve found to be ideal for maintaining efficient camp logistics while also encouraging social interaction.

During the quieter months—like early March, early June, or late October—groups tend to be smaller, usually between 5 and 8 people.

In high season, it’s not uncommon for demand to spike, with 40–50 climbers signing up for the same trip. To ensure a comfortable experience for all, we divide these large numbers into smaller subgroups of 10–15 people. Thanks to our extensive resources, Velam Tours can support up to 300 climbers on the mountain at once. Our current record is 180 climbers on Kilimanjaro at the same time, and we’re aiming to exceed that milestone in 2024.

Guaranteed Group Departures

At Velam Tours, all of our group departures are fully guaranteed. This means that even in the rare event you are the only person booked on a particular date, your trek will still proceed as planned. We are dedicated to honoring every reservation, no matter how small the group. You’ll never have to worry about cancellations due to low participation—we’re committed to making sure every Kilimanjaro adventure happens, just as scheduled.

Which countries do the hikers in Kilimanjaro group climbs typically come from?

Hikers joining our group climbs come from a diverse range of countries, reflecting the global appeal of this iconic trek. Typically, travelers on our hikes are from the USA, Canada, UK, Australia, France, and various EU countries. We also occasionally have trekkers from Brazil, Japan, India, Singapore, and other countries around the globe.

We speak English on our trips

To ensure a comfortable and inclusive environment for all participants, English is the primary language spoken on our trips. This common language fosters communication and camaraderie among the group members while climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. Our group climbs are not just about reaching the summit but also about the shared experiences and connections made along the way.

Who Are Private Kilimanjaro Climbs Best Suited For?

Private Kilimanjaro climbs are an excellent choice for those looking for a more personalized and peaceful adventure. These treks are ideal for climbers who prefer solitude or want to share the journey exclusively with close friends or family—without the presence of unfamiliar faces, no matter how sociable they may be. They’re perfect for family getaways, bonding experiences, or even team-building events that create lasting connections. For groups of old friends, a private trek offers the perfect chance to reconnect in an unforgettable setting.

They also cater well to solo adventurers seeking introspection. If you’re climbing Kilimanjaro for personal growth or spiritual reflection, the quiet and focus of a private journey allows you to connect deeply with both nature and yourself.

In addition, private climbs are a great fit for those interested in more luxurious or customized experiences that aren’t available on regular group departures. For example, special features like overnight camping in the Kilimanjaro crater are only offered on private itineraries through Velam Tours.

Can the Departure Date of a Kilimanjaro Group Climb Be Changed?

The departure dates for our scheduled Kilimanjaro group treks are fixed and cannot be adjusted. These dates are confirmed in advance because other travelers plan their entire trips—including flights and vacation time—around them.

That said, if you’re interested in a group climb but the available dates don’t work for you, we encourage you to contact our team. We’re happy to explore the possibility of creating a new group trek that aligns with your preferred travel period. Alternatively, you can always choose one of our private Kilimanjaro climbs, which offer much more flexibility in both dates and itinerary.

All of our travel specialists at Velam Tours have summited Kilimanjaro multiple times and possess extensive knowledge of the mountain—so you’re always in expert hands.

What Routes on Mount Kilimanjaro Are Used for Group Climbs?

At Velam Tours, we’ve selected the most effective and scenic routes for our group treks—focusing on those with excellent acclimatization profiles and breathtaking landscapes. Our top choices for most group climbs are the seven-day versions of the Lemosho, Machame, and Rongai routes.

We highly recommend these seven-day itineraries over the shorter six-day alternatives, as they provide more time to adjust to the altitude—significantly increasing your chances of successfully reaching the summit.

Group Treks During the Rainy Season

During the rainy seasons, Velam Tours typically selects the Marangu route for group climbs, as it is the only trail that offers overnight stays in mountain huts—providing extra comfort and shelter from the weather.

Another strong option during the wetter months is the Rongai route, which approaches Kilimanjaro from the north. According to the Tanzania Meteorological Authority, this side of the mountain receives far less rainfall than other regions, making it a reliable choice during rainy periods.

We also organize a few Northern Circuit route expeditions for group departures throughout the year. This trail is one of the longest on the mountain, offering a more gradual ascent and a quieter, less-traveled path along Kilimanjaro’s northern slopes. It’s a great choice for those who enjoy longer hikes and want a more immersive and off-the-beaten-path experience.

Can I Have a Private Tent on a Group Climb?

On our group Kilimanjaro expeditions, Velam Tours uses spacious North Face tents built for three occupants. However, for added comfort, we only assign two hikers per tent. If you’re traveling solo and not joining with a companion, you’ll be paired with another same-sex climber to share a tent—ensuring a comfortable experience on the mountain.

The same approach applies to hotel accommodations included in your trek package. Prices are based on double occupancy. If you’re traveling solo, we’ll pair you with another same-sex traveler for your hotel stay. If you’re climbing with a partner, you’ll receive a twin or double room.

For those seeking extra privacy, we offer optional private tents and private hotel rooms. Just let your trip manager know in advance, and we’ll make the necessary arrangements. Please note, additional charges apply for private options, as extra tents require more porters and supplies, which increases the size of the support crew.

Medical Check-Ups on Our Kilimanjaro Trips

At Velam Tours, both private and group climb participants undergo daily medical check-ups. These assessments are mandatory and play a vital role in helping our guides track each climber’s acclimatization progress throughout the trek. The check-up procedures are the same for both group and private expeditions.

If a climber shows signs of poor acclimatization, our guides are fully trained to respond. They may adjust the pace of the hike or, if necessary, administer bottled oxygen to support the trekker’s recovery.

To prioritize your safety at every stage of the climb, Velam Tours provides more oxygen systems than any other local operator on Kilimanjaro. Every expedition is also equipped with a comprehensive medical kit, capable of addressing a wide range of common altitude-related issues.

This thorough approach reflects our unwavering commitment to the health, safety, and well-being of every climber—no matter which type of trek they choose.

Will I Get a Refund if I Finish My Kilimanjaro Climb Sooner?

Finishing your Mount Kilimanjaro trek earlier than planned is not feasible on group climbs. These trips are structured for the group to move together and share key logistical elements like the mountain kitchen and dining tent. It’s not practical—or safe—for an individual to break away from the main group and complete the trek several days in advance.

Even if it were possible to leave early, refunds cannot be issued. This is because park fees—covering conservation, camping, and rescue services—are paid in full to the national park authority in advance and are strictly non-refundable. Additionally, all expedition supplies are procured before the trip begins, and our policy ensures that guides and crew members receive their full compensation regardless of how long the trek ultimately lasts.

This same policy applies to climbers who must end their trek early due to altitude sickness or other health issues.

How Large Is the Support Team on a Kilimanjaro Climb?

On a typical Velam Tours expedition, there are about 2 to 3 crew members per climber, ensuring ample support and attention throughout the journey. Each trek is led by a head guide, who manages the climb and coordinates with a team of assistant guides, porters, and camp staff.

Assistant guides hike alongside you, offering encouragement, sharing knowledge about Kilimanjaro’s natural environment, and helping with any needs that arise. The entire support crew is essential—not just for reaching Uhuru Peak, but also for enriching the experience by sharing stories, cultural insights, and local legends along the way.

At Velam Tours, we deeply value our crew. We provide them with competitive salaries and regularly invest in their professional development, ensuring they remain knowledgeable, capable, and motivated to provide exceptional service.

I Don’t Have Proper Mountain Gear. Can I Participate in a Join Group Hike?

Absolutely! You’re welcome to join a group climb even if you don’t have your own mountain gear. At Velam Tours, we understand that many of our climbers are new to high-altitude trekking and may not own specialized equipment.

To support you, we’ve set up a fully equipped gear rental shop exclusively for our clients. You’ll find everything you need for a successful summit—from sleeping bags and warm jackets to sturdy boots and trekking poles.

Our rental shop is one of the largest in the Kilimanjaro region, with gear available in a wide range of sizes to fit all adventurers. We regularly update our stock with fresh items, ensuring high standards of comfort, safety, and performance. All our gear comes from trusted American brands such as Red Fox, Columbia, and Black Diamond, known for their durability and mountain reliability.

Hygiene is a top priority for us. After every trek, all rental gear is professionally cleaned and dried using our dedicated laundry service. You can count on receiving equipment that is clean, well-maintained, and ready for your adventure.
