Safari in National Parks: Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti

If witnessing the Great Migration of wildebeests is on your travel bucket list, then a visit to the Serengeti Valley is a must. This breathtaking natural spectacle takes place in Tanzania from October to the end of July, as massive herds move in a clockwise path across the Serengeti, briefly crossing into Kenya for just two months. Because the wildebeests spend the majority of the year in Tanzania, we wholeheartedly recommend this tour to experience one of nature’s greatest wonders.

The journey begins with a visit to the stunning Ngorongoro Crater, a natural marvel that acts as a gateway to the Serengeti. In this extraordinary setting, predators and herbivores live side by side, creating a rich and dynamic wildlife experience that’s both humbling and unforgettable.

"Gerenuk" Safari Itinerary

DAY 1

Arrival

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), you’ll be warmly greeted by our driver, who will transfer you to your hotel for a well-deserved rest before your adventure begins. Note: If you plan to start your safari on the same day as your arrival, we recommend choosing a flight that arrives no later than 12:00 PM. This ensures you have enough time to reach your lodge in the national park area, as the drive can take up to 4 hours. For flights arriving later in the day, we suggest booking a hotel closer to the airport for your first night. Need help choosing the best option? Our travel experts are here to assist—just reach out!

DAY 2

Ngorongoro Conservation Area

To maximize your chances of spotting the animals most active in the early morning, you'll depart the hotel at 6:30 AM. For your convenience, breakfast will be packed in lunchboxes, so you can enjoy it on the go. After about an hour’s drive, you will descend into the Ngorongoro Crater—one of Tanzania’s most iconic and biodiverse landscapes. With the highest concentration of wildlife per square kilometer, Ngorongoro offers an exceptional opportunity to spot buffaloes, elephants, lions, wildebeests, zebras, hippos, and feline species such as caracals and servals. With a bit of luck, you may even spot a rhinoceros, one of the rarest and most endangered animals in the region. By lunchtime, you'll arrive at a picturesque lakeside spot, where you’ll enjoy your lunchboxes. After lunch, your safari will continue for a few more hours before heading toward Serengeti National Park. Along the way, you'll stop at a memorial honoring Bernhard and Michael Grzimek, two West German researchers whose tireless conservation efforts helped preserve Northern Tanzania’s national parks. Their inspiring story is detailed in the book "Serengeti Shall Not Die", available on Amazon.com. In the evening, you’ll arrive at your lodge in the heart of the Serengeti Valley, ready for more adventures the next day. Important Safari Guidelines As this is your first day on safari, we kindly ask you to observe the following rules to ensure your safety and help protect the environment: Do not exit the vehicle unless in designated areas. Violating this rule may result in heavy fines for the company or even the revocation of its operating license. Off-road driving is strictly prohibited. It damages the fragile savanna ecosystem. Smoking is permitted, but please take extreme care when extinguishing and disposing of cigarette butts, as they are a common cause of savanna fires. Please avoid putting your feet on the seats or sitting on the backs of the safari vehicle seats. This can cause significant wear and tear, making the vehicles unusable over time.

Serengeti National Park

Today, you’ll venture into the world’s most renowned safari destination — the Serengeti National Park. Known for its vast plains and exceptional wildlife, the Serengeti is not only one of the largest parks in Tanzania but also one of the richest in biodiversity. As you explore the park, you are almost guaranteed to encounter lions, antelopes, elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, and zebras. With a bit of luck, you may also spot rarer species like cheetahs, serval cats, and other elusive creatures of the African savannah. The Serengeti is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, celebrated for its vital ecosystem, high density of wildlife, and its role in the spectacular Great Migration—a natural phenomenon unlike any other. This unforgettable day will unfold in the central Serengeti, specifically in the Seronera Valley—an area of breathtaking beauty and vibrant wildlife activity. It is here that you’ll experience the essence of the Serengeti, where every turn on the trail may reveal a new wonder. Interestingly, this landscape also inspired Disney’s animated film The Lion King—but what you’ll witness is no animation. It’s nature in its rawest, most authentic form: wild, untamed, and magnificent.
